Jobs on an Excavation
We will attempt to design your tasks at Mount Zion to suit you perfectly. As a team member you will be assigned to a specific area of excavation, and to ensure continuity and to give you a sense of progress you will be a participant at this location throughout your stay. You will probably find yourself becoming very territorial about your area.
The tasks themselves will occasionally be switched, but you will probably find yourself becoming an expert in a certain job. Every area needs people for heavy pickaxing, hoeing, wheel-barrowing, and the collection and disposal of soil and rubble. Other duties include trowelling, brushing, and careful digging with small picks. Fills which are taken out will require being sieved for very small objects such as coins and beads. One of the responsible tasks is the washing of the pottery. It is recommended that archaeology students and those who have already spent a season at the site participate in the recording and artifact analysis procedures, as well as helping out in the field with surveying and the taking of elevations.
